The United States, Britain, France, and Germany have expressed concern over China's recent Coast Guard patrols off the east coast of Taiwan. China views Taiwan as its own territory and has sent Coast Guard ships to the area, citing a 'special maritime traffic law-enforcement operation'.
The US and its allies argue that these actions threaten regional stability and freedom of navigation. A US State Department spokesperson stated that China's actions are 'deeply destabilizing' and undermine the peaceful resolution of issues.
The Chinese foreign ministry has not responded to requests for comment. Taiwan has reported that three merchant ships were 'harassed' by the Chinese Coast Guard, which claimed jurisdiction over the waters. The incident has raised tensions in the region, with Western countries reiterating their opposition to any unilateral change to the status quo.
