The US Central Command has utilized three Corsair unmanned surface vessels to strike a submarine and ship maintenance facility at the Bandar Abbas naval base in Iran. This marks the first time American forces have employed sea drones in combat operations.
The strike is part of the latest round of US operations against Iran, following the revocation of a license that allowed Iran to sell oil. The US military hit dozens of Iranian military targets, including the use of Corsair USVs to degrade Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping.
The Corsair USV, built by Saronic, has a range of over 1,000 nautical miles and a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds. The US Navy has been testing and utilizing Corsair vessels for various missions over the past two years, including a recent rescue operation near the Strait of Hormuz.
