Ukraine's 123rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade carried out the mission on the Russian-occupied Kinburn Spit in southern Ukraine. A sea drone, or uncrewed surface vessel (USV), transported and deployed an armed ground robot, or uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV), behind Russian lines.
The operation, described as the first of its kind, reflects Ukraine's rapid embrace of uncrewed systems to counter Russia's invasion. The UGV, armed with a machine gun, engaged a target beyond the beach before the USV departed.
The use of uncrewed systems in this operation could be a glimpse of what's to come for amphibious operations, with robotic systems potentially leading the way in future landings.
