RGG Studio’s next action title, *Stranger Than Heaven*, introduces a fighting system that departs sharply from the Yakuza series. Set across mid-20th century Japan, the game splits attacks into left- and right-side inputs, with triggers mapped to limbs and grapples. Charged attacks and timed releases add depth, while weapons—knives, mallets, and heavier tools—play a central role. Upgrades will span decades, evolving from vintage craftsmanship to modern designs.
The demo highlighted three fights that escalated in challenge. Early bouts tested weapon swapping and counterplay, but a towering gang leader forced slower, deliberate swings with a crowbar. A final duel against a katana-wielding opponent in Osaka demanded Souls-like reflexes, with healing windows and baited strikes testing patience and precision. Parries and follow-ups were essential, though the reviewer noted the absence of Yakuza’s signature contextual humor.
Sega teased vehicle-based combat and broader game systems remain untested. The title launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series S/X.
