The Pentagon has started using generative AI tools to write reports mandated by Congress, significantly reducing the time and staffing required. Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael highlighted this development as a key example of the Department of Defense's adoption of generative AI.
The department has made AI tools available to all six military branches through its GenAI.mil platform since December 2025.
According to Michael, AI can draft a congressional report in just five hours, a task that would otherwise take 200 hours of staffing time.
