OpenAI is shutting down Atlas, its AI-powered browser launched in October. However, the company is not abandoning its AI browsing ambitions. Instead, it's redistributing Atlas's features across ChatGPT's desktop app and a Google Chrome extension.
The move comes after OpenAI's CEO instructed the team to cut back on side projects, leading to the shutdown of its AI video generation tool Sora. OpenAI appears to have concluded that the browser is a feature, not a destination, and is folding Atlas's capabilities into existing platforms.
OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT extension on Chrome, allowing users to ask questions, summarize content, and start tasks from the browser. The company is also boosting its ChatGPT desktop app with a more robust browser, enabling users to browse websites and interact with web pages without leaving the app.
