John Jumper, who shared a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2024, is leaving DeepMind after nearly 9 years. He will be joining rival Anthropic. Jumper expressed his gratitude to DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for the opportunity to lead the AlphaFold team.
Jumper's departure comes as another key member, Noam Shazeer, also leaves DeepMind to join OpenAI. Jumper and Hassabis won the Nobel Prize for their work on AlphaFold, an AI model that can predict the 3D structure of proteins.

Jumper's move to Anthropic marks a significant shift in the AI landscape, as Anthropic becomes a major player in the field.
