Researchers have made a surprising discovery about the eating habits of Homo floresiensis, also known as the Hobbits. Until about 60,000 years ago, these diminutive hominins shared the island of Flores with Komodo dragons and other animals.
Initial findings suggested that the Hobbits had hunted and butchered dwarf elephants, but new research from the University of Tübingen suggests that Komodo dragons were the actual hunters. The Hobbits may have only scavenged what was left.
This new information could challenge assumptions about Homo floresiensis and its place in human evolution, particularly regarding which hominin species was the first to venture beyond Africa.
