Critical Energy, a startup founded by SpaceX alum Spencer Jackson, has raised $22 million in seed funding to develop modular turbines for geothermal power plants. The company aims to fill a major gap in the geothermal industry by providing turbines that can be built quickly and efficiently.
Jackson, who worked on Falcon Heavy, Starship, and the Raptor rocket engine at SpaceX, is leveraging his experience to design the turbines. The first power plant using Critical Energy's turbines is scheduled to be completed by 2027.
The startup hopes to make gigawatts worth of turbines by the early 2030s, with a long-term goal of 300 gigawatts a year by 2045. Geothermal energy has the potential to provide at least 42 terawatts of capacity worldwide, according to the IEA.
