The FDA has cleared a second fly species, Lucilia cuprina, for use in maggot wound therapy.
This species, also known as the Australian sheep blowfly, is a close relative of the common green bottle fly, which was first approved in 2004.
Cuprina Holdings, the company behind the clearance, now has FDA approval to sell two species of fly larvae, positioning it to potentially dominate the global maggot market.
