Aseon Labs, a startup based in Redwood City, California, has raised $10 million in seed funding to develop automated pods that can inspect, clean, and charge robotaxis. These pods, described as robotic pit stops, can be scattered throughout cities to reduce deadhead miles - miles driven without a paying passenger. The company plans to use the funds to build five prototypes and grow its team.
The idea has caught the attention of investors, including Crane Venture Partners, Y Combinator, and Uber co-founder Garrett Camp's venture firm Expa. Aseon Labs' co-founder and CEO George Kalligeros believes that a network of distributed autonomous pods can slash deadhead miles and make robotaxi services profitable.
The pods are designed to operate autonomously, using computer vision and AI to detect problems and avoid attempting to solve complex issues. Aseon Labs hasn't signed contracts with any robotaxi companies yet, but there is reportedly widespread interest in the concept.
