Paul Meade, the Apple vice president overseeing the Vision Pro headset, is leaving the company to join OpenAI. Meade led the development of AI-powered smart glasses set to launch next year. His departure is reportedly linked to John Ternus' upcoming promotion to Apple CEO and the subsequent shake-up of the hardware engineering team.
Meade's move to OpenAI comes as the company works on an AI device with Apple's former chief design officer Jony Ive. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described the device as more peaceful and calm than an iPhone.

The departure may indicate a shift in Apple's hardware strategy, particularly with the Vision Pro headset not being a commercial hit. Apple is hoping more affordable smart glasses will help compete with wearable devices from Meta.
