Motorsport team Black Falcon turned to 3D scanning to confirm repairs on a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup after a heavy crash at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, ensuring the car’s geometry met competition standards before its return to the Nordschleife.
The team used SHINING 3D’s FreeScan Trak Nova, a wireless handheld scanner paired with a tracking unit, to inspect rebuilt sections with 0.02 mm accuracy. The system’s real-time processing and wide field of view let engineers scan large structures like the chassis and then zoom into fine repair details without switching tools. Black Falcon’s technical partnership with SHINING 3D now extends beyond inspection, feeding scanned data into CFD simulations to refine aerodynamic parts like the splitter.
The approach reflects a growing trend in motorsport where 3D scanning replaces traditional measurement tools, from Red Bull Racing’s Formula One quality checks to Kawasaki Puccetti Racing’s fairing optimizations. SHINING 3D’s scanner won the 2026 iF Design Award for its portability and precision.
