Elbridge Colby, undersecretary of Defense for Policy, emphasized that the US is not disengaging from Asia and instead wants its partners to take on more responsibility for their defense.
The US strategy involves a 'posture of deterrence by denial' along the First Island Chain, which includes Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Borneo. Colby stressed that this approach requires investment from allies, not just American forces.
By asking allies to invest in their own defense, the US is seeking to build stronger partnerships, not dependencies. According to Colby, when partners are strong, deterrence is also strong, indicating a more collaborative approach to regional security.
