The US Army is struggling to meet its production goal of 100,000 155-mm howitzer shells per month due to manufacturing problems. As of March 2026, the Army was only producing 36,000 rounds per month.
The main issue lies in the production of projectile metal parts, which is the limiting factor in reaching the desired production rate. A facility in Mesquite, Texas, operated by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, has been unable to produce parts that meet contract specifications despite a $469 million investment.
The Army is exploring alternative solutions, including reviewing the contract for the Mesquite facility to determine if any funds can be recouped. The Army hopes to increase production by modernizing existing plants and creating new facilities, with a goal of producing 140,000 rounds per month by December 2027.
