President Donald Trump presented the Medal of Honor to three service members who fought in Vietnam and Afghanistan. Retired Marine Maj. James Capers Jr., retired Army Maj. Nicholas Dockery, and retired Marine Col. John W. Ripley received the award for their bravery in combat.
Capers saved his reconnaissance team in South Vietnam following a bloody ambush in 1967. Dockery used his body to shield a soldier from a grenade blast in Afghanistan in 2012. Ripley spent hours under fire planting explosives to stop a North Vietnamese offensive in 1972.
The Medal of Honor ceremony took place on Thursday afternoon, after Congress passed laws to upgrade the awards previously received by the three men.
