The Houthi rebels of Yemen are expanding their attacks on Saudi shipping to the northern Red Sea, which could severely impact global energy supplies. The rebels have already struck Saudi ships in the southern part of the Red Sea and refineries along the northern portion.
The expansion of the Houthi campaign against Saudi shipping began with an attack off the port of Yanbu on the NCC Wafa, a Saudi oil tanker. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the attack was precise and successful.
The Houthi actions in the Red Sea region, combined with the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, continue to reduce commercial traffic in both areas. The situation has led to a significant increase in oil prices, although Brent Crude has fallen to slightly over $79 a barrel.
