The French Army has a recruitment surplus, with more applicants than available positions, forcing the army to slow recruitment. However, the army lacks essential equipment, including spare parts, deep-fires weaponry, and counter-drone defense.
Deputy chief of staff Gen. Patrick Justel stated that the French Army has 'more than enough' recruitment candidates, but faces significant gaps in equipment. In contrast to countries like Germany and Poland, which struggle to attract personnel, France has a large youth cohort and high trust in the armed forces.
The French Army plans to recruit 21,400 active-duty troops in 2026, but Justel emphasized the need for improved equipment, particularly in areas such as electronic warfare and deep fires. The army has identified the equivalent of ten battalions needed to enhance its capabilities, but these efforts are long-term.
