The A-10 Warthog has been given a new lifeline by Congress, with an amendment requiring the US Air Force to continue supporting the jet until its planned retirement in 2030. The amendment, added to the National Defense Authorization bill, calls for the Air Force to preserve lessons learned and operational expertise from A-10 missions to help shape future replacement systems.
The move comes as the Air Force has been preparing to retire the Warthog, with its standdown currently scheduled for 2030. However, the recent demand for the jet in conflicts in the Middle East has seen it earn a reprieve. The amendment also requests a report on the A-10's combat employment, recent operational relevance, and modernization options.

The Air Force is now exploring alternative options to replace the A-10, including autonomous and non-traditional capabilities. The amendment proposes using a limited number of A-10s to support the development of emerging technologies, such as drone-based systems, that could ultimately provide an effective replacement for many A-10 mission sets.
