President Donald Trump will meet with NATO leaders in Turkey this week to enforce the spending promises made by member countries last year. Trump has been pushing for NATO countries to spend 5% of their annual gross domestic product on defense over the next decade.
The US president has reshaped the alliance and bent it to his will, despite ongoing tensions with its members over various issues. Trump's mission is to ensure that all allies step up immediately and get on the path to 5% spending.
Trump will also meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, among others, to discuss key issues such as the war in Ukraine and Syria's role in fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon. The summit comes as Trump's administration makes the case for 'NATO 3.0', which envisions an alliance with Europe taking on more of its security needs.
