Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the lead developer of VLC Media Player, has founded a new startup called Kyber. The company is developing an infrastructure layer for controlling remote devices in real time, with applications in robotics, drones, and remote IT access. Kempf believes that hundreds of millions of robots and drones will be roaming the streets in a few years, and Kyber's technology is designed to support this growth.
Kyber's core software is an SDK that synchronizes video, audio, sensor data, and control inputs with minimal latency. The company has raised a $5 million round led by Lightspeed and has already started commercial deployment with customers in defense, telco, robotics, and AI.
The startup's approach to eliminating lag is rooted in video-streaming technology, and its team includes a large number of forward-deployed engineers who provide hands-on, custom deployment for clients. With its open-source core project and productized version for enterprise customers, Kyber is poised to make a significant impact in the growing field of physical AI.
