A rare seismic doublet occurred in Venezuela on June 24, with two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 striking just 39 seconds apart. The short interval between the quakes and the type of soil the buildings were on contributed to the extensive damage. Many structures collapsed, while others remained standing, due to factors like resonance and the quality of construction.
The earthquakes were felt as far away as Colombia, northern Brazil, and several Caribbean islands. The death toll is mounting, and rescue efforts are being hindered by the lack of equipment and supplies. Humanitarian organizations have noted the urgent need for bandages, medications, and specialized tools to free people trapped in the rubble.
The international community is providing support, with the US committing $150 million to address the emergency and countries like Mexico and Spain sending personnel and aid to strengthen search, rescue, and humanitarian relief efforts.
