The Trump administration has invested in coal plants with repeated environmental violations. The Cumberland Fossil Plant in Tennessee, which has been cited for air-pollution violations in 2017 and 2023, was initially slated to close within the decade. However, after the Trump administration replaced four of the Tennessee Valley Authority's board members, the agency reneged on its retirement plan.
The plant is now set to receive $46 million in federal funding to extend its lifespan. This move is part of a nationwide push by President Donald Trump to keep older coal plants running.
The investment has raised concerns about the administration's commitment to environmental regulations and the potential health impacts of continued coal plant operation.
