Scientists at Penn State have demonstrated a new way to map underground terrain using seismic waves generated by thunderstorms. The approach leverages "thunderquakes," where the energy from thunder enters the Earth’s upper crust and produces measurable vibrations. While these signals are typically too complex to interpret, the team developed a model to filter and reconstruct terrain details beneath the local campus.
Seismic imaging traditionally relies on earthquakes or controlled explosions to create waves that reveal subsurface features like rock composition, water presence, or fractures. Thunderquakes offer a passive alternative, eliminating the need for artificial triggers or waiting for natural events. The Penn State method isolates usable signals from the chaotic thunder-induced vibrations, enabling terrain reconstruction.
The breakthrough suggests thunderstorms could supplement existing seismic imaging techniques, particularly in regions where earthquakes are rare. The team plans to refine the model and expand testing to validate its broader application.
