Sweden’s tech scene is heating up again after a dip in venture activity. The country’s startups have raised $2.8 billion so far in 2023, according to Dealroom, with projections pointing to at least $5 billion by year’s end. Last year’s total was $3.2 billion, still well below the 2021 peak of $8.5 billion when the market was at its hottest.
The latest wave includes standouts like legal AI startup Legora and vibe-coding tool Lovable, joining established names such as Spotify and Klarna. Sophia Bendz, a partner at Cherry Ventures, attributes the surge to a cultural shift: founders now prioritize creating over traditional paths like banking or consulting. She points to mentorship from first-generation entrepreneurs, including Spotify founder Daniel Ek, who also launched Neko Health.
American investors are increasingly active in Stockholm, drawn by the ecosystem’s momentum. Bendz notes more term sheets are being handed out, signaling confidence in Sweden’s ability to build globally competitive companies.
