Researchers are on the hunt for coral reefs that can withstand the rising temperatures caused by global warming. Led by Anne Cohen, a scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the team is using a yellow robot called Yellowfin to navigate the Majuro lagoon in the Marshall Islands.
The robot is programmed to guide Cohen to specific coordinates, helping her locate coral strongholds that may hold the key to repopulating more degraded reefs.
These strongholds are crucial in the fight against coral bleaching, which is devastating reefs worldwide. By finding and studying these resilient reefs, scientists hope to gain a better understanding of how to protect and preserve coral ecosystems.
