Aleksandr Samokutyaev, a Russian cosmonaut who spent 322 days in space, has died at the age of 56. He served twice as a crew member aboard the International Space Station, including during the final US space shuttle mission in 2011.
Samokutyaev's death marks the first time a former ISS long-duration resident has passed away in the 26 years of the space station's operation. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, has extended condolences to Samokutyaev's family and loved ones, honoring his service and memory.
