Rivian’s chief financial officer Claire McDonough will leave the company at the end of October after three years in the role, the automaker announced Thursday. She is relocating to the East Coast to be closer to family and will take a CFO position at GE Vernova. McDonough’s resignation is not due to any disagreement, Rivian said, and the company has already begun searching for a permanent replacement.
Derek Mulvey, vice president of finance, will serve as interim CFO once McDonough departs. Her exit comes as Rivian ramps up production and sales of its R2 SUV, which began shipping to customers this summer. McDonough joined Rivian in January 2021 during a turbulent period, overseeing its $12 billion IPO and helping stabilize the company’s balance sheet despite supply chain constraints and rising costs.
Under her leadership, Rivian finalized a $5.8 billion technology joint venture with Volkswagen Group in November 2024, securing investment through 2027 in exchange for access to its electrical architecture and software. McDonough previously worked at JPMorgan and Fairway Market, focusing on cost control and cross-team collaboration with design, engineering, and CEO RJ Scaringe.
