Rivian's CEO RJ Scaringe recently discussed the company's new R2 SUV and its place in the electric vehicle market. Scaringe noted that the R2 is crucial to the company's success, and if it fails, Rivian would need to reconfigure its business. He also shared his thoughts on the Ferrari Luce and the Cybertruck's failure, stating that the latter was too niche for the mass market.
Scaringe emphasized the importance of having more electric vehicle options in the market, particularly in the United States, where Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y dominate the market. He also discussed Rivian's plans for autonomous driving technology and the company's decision to build its own silicon and software.

The CEO acknowledged that the company's Gen 1 autonomy system, launched in 2021, was a dead end and that the new Gen 2.5 system in the R2 is an intermediate step towards the company's goal of achieving Level 3 and Level 4 autonomy.
