Conservators at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields are studying phosphorescent and fluorescent pigments from designer Stephen Sprouse’s 1980s collections to prevent color fading. Their research, presented at the American Chemical Society meeting in Chicago, aims to improve the long-term preservation of these vibrant materials.
The pigments rely on photochemical reactions: phosphors store absorbed light energy and release it slowly, while fluorescent pigments convert UV light into visible light for brighter hues. Sprouse’s use of Day-Glo colors defined an era, blending punk aesthetics with graffiti prints and catching the attention of figures like Andy Warhol.
Understanding these materials’ unique chemistry could guide better conservation, storage, and exhibition practices for both fashion and art. The findings highlight the intersection of chemistry and cultural preservation.
