OpenAI is expanding its focus to families, hiring a product manager to create experiences for households. The move comes as ChatGPT's user base broadens beyond younger users, with 31% of global users now aged 35 and older.
The new role aims to build trust-sensitive consumer experiences, particularly for parents and caregivers. According to Sensor Tower, nearly one in four US smartphone users who are parents used ChatGPT in Q2, up from 16% a year earlier.
Experts see this shift as a necessary step, given the unique safety challenges posed by AI products used by children and teenagers. OpenAI has faced lawsuits over ChatGPT's impact on younger users and has introduced safety measures, including parental controls and a 'Trusted Contact' feature.
