Meta has addressed a privacy concern in its AI-powered smart glasses by closing a loophole that allowed users to hide the recording indicator light. The fix ensures the glasses stop recording if the safety LED is covered during a session, preventing bystanders from being unaware of active capture.
The issue surfaced after users discovered they could bypass earlier safeguards by covering the LED after starting a recording. Meta’s executive vice president of wearables, Alex Himel, confirmed the update in a Threads post, stating the camera will now halt if the light is obstructed, restoring reliable alerts for nearby people.
The change follows backlash over non-consensual recordings shared online, prompting Meta to prioritize clearer transparency for bystanders. The update will roll out in the coming weeks.
