Google and Amazon have released their sustainability reports, showing a substantial increase in carbon emissions. Google's total carbon emissions are up 25% since last year, while Amazon's are up 16%. The rise in emissions is largely attributed to the companies' growing use of AI, which requires significant amounts of energy and resources.
Both companies have pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the coming years, but the reports suggest that AI has made this goal more challenging. The increased energy consumption and resource usage required for AI have led to a surge in Scope 3 emissions, which include pollution from purchased goods and services.
The construction and outfitting of data centers, as well as the production of GPUs and memory chips, are significant contributors to the emissions. To meet their net-zero targets, Google and Amazon will need to ramp up their renewable energy purchases, invest in low-carbon manufacturing, and buy carbon removal credits.
