Researchers have made a groundbreaking discovery about the extent of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal networks globally. These networks, which form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, span an astonishing 110 quadrillion kilometers.
The study, led by the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks, utilized a combination of literature reviews, soil samples, machine learning, and laboratory testing to estimate the distribution and mass of these systems.
The findings reveal that these networks sequester approximately 1 billion tons of carbon annually, which would otherwise contribute to atmospheric warming. The research provides a significant step forward in understanding the global reach and importance of these underground fungal communities.
