Health officials are investigating an outbreak of the diarrheal parasite Cyclospora, which has surged to extraordinary heights in Michigan.
The state has reported 3,309 cases of cyclosporiasis as of July 14, with 44 hospitalizations. Lettuce and salad greens are the prime suspects, based on interviews with over 1,000 people sickened in Michigan.
The outbreak is nationwide, but Michigan is the hardest hit, with a significant increase from the typical 50 cases reported in recent years. The source of the outbreak has not been confirmed, and there may be multiple sources.
