Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has proposed the creation of a new regulatory body to oversee frontier AI model releases. The body, modeled after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, would test models and develop best practices for their release.
Hassabis envisions the regulator being staffed by technical experts and open-source representatives, with financial backing from AI labs. This approach would allow for technically focused regulation while supporting innovation and responsible behavior.
The proposal comes as AI regulation remains a contentious issue, with the Trump Administration and tech industry holding differing views. Establishing a self-regulatory organization could address concerns and provide a framework for responsible AI development.
