Cursor, the AI startup now part of SpaceX, launched Origin this week—a code-hosting platform built to compete with GitHub by offering collaborative repositories, pull requests, and AI-driven workflows. The service integrates with GitHub, letting developers sync repos between the two platforms without abandoning existing workflows.
Origin arrives as GitHub faces mounting criticism over frequent outages and performance issues, including a six-hour global degradation on the same day of Cursor’s launch. GitHub has logged 257 outages in the past year, according to LeadDev, prompting some high-profile users to migrate elsewhere. Cursor positions Origin as a lighter, AI-native alternative while promising future "agent native" features and a broader app ecosystem.
Despite GitHub’s dominance—180 million developers as of October 2023—Cursor’s interoperable approach lowers the barrier to adoption. The startup must still prove Origin can scale reliably and attract users beyond its existing AI editor user base.
