The company sources tissue from vetted biobanks and brokers, then feeds it nutrients via a proprietary system to preserve its structure and molecular programs. Polansky emphasizes the tissue arrives de-identified and is handled under institutional review board oversight with documented donor consent.
The startup’s core innovation is pairing living tissue with an AI model that predicts which untested chemicals might benefit specific skin functions. Those predictions are tested on the preserved tissue, and the results feed back into the model, accelerating discovery. Outer Biosciences has already moved from a brute-force literature-mining approach to generating roughly one new candidate every six weeks, with six leads in its pipeline and dozens more logged. The company focuses on cosmetic ingredients, not drugs, so it avoids FDA approval by targeting standardized names and safety testing under OECD guidelines.
Outer Biosciences plans to license its findings to beauty or pharma companies rather than build its own consumer brand. Four of its six current leads are likely to reach commercialization, while collaborative research partnerships already generate revenue. The company has raised $23 million and employs 19 people, with operations based near Cambridge, Massachusetts.
