Young workers aged 22 to 25 in AI-impacted occupations have seen employment drop 19% compared with peers in more resistant fields, according to a Stanford University study. The August 2026 update to "Canaries in the Coal Mine? Six Facts about the Recent Employment Effects of Artificial Intelligence" confirms these losses are widening, up from a 13% gap last year. The research tracks entry-level roles most exposed to AI automation, where younger workers are being replaced by cost-effective systems.
Older workers, by contrast, show little change in employment trends so far. The study’s authors attribute the disparity to AI’s rapid adoption in tasks traditionally handled by newer employees, such as data processing and routine analysis. Their findings suggest the gap is not just persisting but deepening as AI tools become more capable.
The report’s authors warn the trend could reshape career paths for young professionals entering AI-sensitive industries. They call for further research to determine whether older workers will eventually face similar displacement or if younger employees will adapt through new skills.
