Williams Team Principal James Vowles has revealed he was concerned about losing both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon this season as the team struggled through a difficult campaign. After the pair confirmed their stays for 2027, Vowles described the news as a “weight lifted” off the factory, praising the drivers for their loyalty despite the team’s P9 position in the championship.
The 2025 season saw Williams rise to fifth with two podiums, but 2026 has been far tougher, with only 11 points scored so far. Vowles acknowledged the risk of losing top-tier drivers when performance falters, but noted both Sainz and Albon stood by the team during setbacks. Their recent re-signings, announced separately, reflect different commitments—Sainz required behind-the-scenes proof of progress, while Albon’s long-term dedication was already clear.
Vowles emphasized the importance of retaining the duo for stability and external confidence, calling their decisions “incredibly important” for morale and future planning. He stressed that the drivers are not the team’s current limitation, urging internal fixes to match the renewed belief. Williams now aims to build on this momentum as it targets a turnaround.
