Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez says the forthcoming 850cc MotoGP motorcycles feel closer to a true motorbike and should raise the series' entertainment factor when they debut in 2027.
The rule change trims engine size from 1,000cc to 850cc and removes the ride‑height devices that have dominated the grid since 2019. Riding a freshly‑tested 850cc YZR‑M1 at Brno, Fernandez noted a modest loss of power but a more natural, rider‑controlled feel. He also highlighted the planned switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres, which he expects will let competitors run nearer each other without over‑loading the front tyre.

Because he alternates between the two tyre brands in testing, Fernandez admits the differing grip levels make the opening laps tricky and have already led to a crash. At the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix in Assen he will trial a new aerodynamic package on the 850cc bike, gathering data to assess whether the changes improve performance for the latter half of the season.
