Silverstone Museum has become the first UK venue to host "Black Cats & Chequered Flags," an immersive virtual and mixed‑reality exhibition that explores the life and achievements of two‑time Formula 1 world champion Alberto Ascari. Developed by the Multiverse Institute for Arts and Technology, the installation blends VR, archival footage and multiplayer gameplay, allowing guests to perform a simulated 1950s pit stop and then race alongside Ascari at Monza with period‑accurate audio and visuals.
The project, which debuted at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello and was selected for the Venice Immersive section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025, highlights Ascari’s deep connection to Silverstone. Director of Curation Rob Jaina notes Ascari’s first race at the circuit in 1948, his 1949 BRDC International Trophy win for Ferrari, and his 1952‑53 championship victories on the track. Ascari remains the only Italian driver to claim multiple titles with Ferrari and the most recent Italian world champion.

Museum CEO Phil Lawrie expects the exhibit to draw strong visitor numbers ahead of a projected record summer season. Children 15 and under will enjoy free admission from July 6 to September 1, and the exhibition will run alongside the museum’s existing displays, including the "Driven by Design" showcase of F1 designers.
