Mercedes has asked its legal team to examine whether the FIA can be pressured to amend the points George Russell lost in the Monaco Grand Prix after a pit‑lane speeding breach. The team says it is looking for any avenue to “remedy” the situation, which they view as having championship implications.
Russell was handed a five‑second penalty for exceeding the pit‑lane speed limit on his first stop, but a later failure to serve that sanction during a safety‑car period forced a drive‑through that erased his podium chances. He fell from third to 12th. Alpine’s successful right‑of‑review for Pierre Gasly, which highlighted a mistake in the FIA’s pit‑lane measurements, has raised questions about the validity of other speed‑limit penalties from the race.
Team principal Toto Wolff told reporters in Barcelona that Mercedes is evaluating the Gasly precedent and discussing possible remedies with the FIA, even though the odds of overturning the result appear slim. He noted that a 20‑second loss could have kept Russell in P3 or P4. Meanwhile, McLaren and Red Bull have signaled intent to appeal the stewards’ decision to reinstate Gasly’s podium finish.
