Mercedes has revived an engine trick that was previously banned by the FIA, catching its customer team McLaren off guard. The trick involves drivers lifting off the throttle just before crossing the timing line, allowing them to maximize power on the run to the line. This counterintuitive method of driving was planned by Mercedes prior to the weekend and came naturally to its drivers.
The difference it made was significant, with Antonelli rising to a top speed of 253km/h, 11km/h faster than Charles Leclerc's Ferrari. The trick made a big difference, but it's not the sole reason for Antonelli's pole position.

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella expressed surprise at the revival of the trick, stating that it requires specific elements to use the power unit. McLaren is hoping to upgrade its power unit specification from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards, which could help it exploit the trick and close the gap to Mercedes.
