McLaren's 2026 F1 car has fallen behind Mercedes' development curve by three months. The team's technical department was focused on defending its championships last year, which led to missteps in early development choices for 2026.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged that the team adopted some incorrect conceptual directions, which will take a couple of months to redirect. The team's car is currently lacking in downforce and has a draggy design, making it vulnerable to tough conditions.

McLaren driver Lando Norris expressed frustration with the car's performance, saying it was one of the hardest cars he's ever driven in Formula 1. The team is working to improve its development direction, but significant upgrades are not expected until after the summer break.
