McLaren lodged a formal notification of appeal with the FIA International Court of Appeal after the stewards cancelled Pierre Gasly's two penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix, restoring his finish from seventh to third. The reversal, prompted by an admitted measurement error in the pit‑lane speed limit, stripped Isack Hadjar of his maiden podium and demoted Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bulls pair.
The team filed the appeal within an hour of the decision, invoking the 96‑hour rule that allows a challenge. McLaren contends that all teams operated under the published regulations and adjusted their pit‑lane procedures accordingly, so removing the penalties now penalises those who complied with the rules. The appeal stresses the need for consistent, transparent enforcement to preserve sporting fairness.
Red Bull is also weighing an appeal, while Mercedes is consulting legal counsel after George Russell's penalties dropped him out of the points. The case will test the FIA's penalty‑review process and could set a precedent for how measurement errors are handled in future races.
