Liam Lawson's defensive line at Turn 1 in Barcelona turned into an unexpected catalyst for teammate Nico Hulkenberg's retirement. While shadowing Lawson in ninth place, Hulkenberg's Audi R26 was struck by a wheel that Lawson had knocked into the gravel exit of Turn 12. The wheel flung a handful of gravel into the Audi, activating the emergency trigger on the left side of the roll‑hoop and cutting power completely. Hulkenberg described the incident as a “total switch‑off, and game over,” adding that the car coasted into the pit lane with no chance of recovery.
The strange chain reaction left both drivers stunned. Lawson replied, “Are you serious?! No way,” and noted he had no intention of aiming at anything. Hulkenberg said he had never seen anything like it in his career and lamented the bad luck, especially as the race was already seeing high attrition. Audi had been poised for points, with Hulkenberg in line for the team's first podium after a difficult season.
Compounding the setback, Audi rookie Gabriel Bortoleto also struggled, reporting a start‑procedure issue and damage after two wheels touched gravel near Turn 12. The double misfortune underscores the challenges Audi faces in converting reliability into results as the season progresses.
