Ferrari's front row slot at the Austrian Grand Prix has sparked intrigue about whether it can repeat its strategic masterclass to beat Mercedes. However, the high tyre-degradation scenario and harder overtaking at the Red Bull Ring may make it difficult.
The track's characteristics, such as fewer high-speed corners, make it more about acceleration and traction demands, which could affect the cars' performance. Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra noted that overtaking is harder at the Red Bull Ring, making a three-stop strategy less effective.
Mercedes appears to have a bigger pace advantage against Ferrari than at Barcelona, but Ferrari has two cars up in the fight at the front, opening options to try different strategies and force Mercedes to make tough decisions.
