Gary Anderson believes the idea of a customer engine in Formula 1 is flawed. He thinks it could create a divide between teams with manufacturer-backed engines and those with customer engines. Anderson suggests that a better approach would be to introduce a new engine formula, such as a V8 or a 2.4-litre normally aspirated V6, which could provide the noise and horsepower fans are looking for.
Anderson's concerns stem from his experience with previous attempts at introducing spec engines and gearboxes, which did not work out. He also notes that the FIA's current regulations have contributed to the problems with power units in F1.

Anderson proposes that the FIA and Liberty Media should work with power unit manufacturers and independent engine manufacturers to develop a new power unit concept. He suggests setting a maximum customer price for the season's supply of the unit and allowing independent manufacturers to design, build, and market their products if they can find customers.
