Aston Martin leads Formula 1’s mid-season upgrade spending war according to a new analysis, outspending rivals including Ferrari and Red Bull. The team’s aggressive development strategy, highlighted by a major overhaul at the Hungarian Grand Prix, places it in Tier 1 of the spending rankings. Ferrari and Red Bull follow in Tier 2 at 90% of the benchmark, while McLaren sits at 85% in Tier 3.
The rankings reflect a weighted calculation based on the number, timing, and scale of upgrades introduced since the season opener. Aston Martin’s spending is driven by significant changes like a new chassis, while Mercedes sits in Tier 6 at 55%, despite its claims of tight budget constraints. The team’s principal, Toto Wolff, previously stated Mercedes lacked the funds for further developments, though the analysis suggests spacing and timing may play a role in its lower tally.
Crash damage costs are also eating into budgets, with Red Bull spending $2.8 million on repairs—the highest among teams—followed by Alpine at $2.2 million. This could explain Red Bull’s decision to scale back development in the second half of the season. Meanwhile, an extra $3 million cost-cap allowance for 2027 rule changes may give teams like Mercedes room to increase spending late in the season.
McLaren expects Mercedes to leverage this allowance, potentially shifting the balance of the title fight. The outcome may hinge on Mercedes’ planned major upgrade for the Malaysia/Bahrain stint, which could redefine the spending hierarchy.
